Themes of The Tempest

The Tempest by William Shakespeare dipicts many themes throughout the course of the story.

Desire for Freedom
Caliban wants to be free from his master Prospero.  Throughout the story he plots to kill Prospero by using Stephano and promising him he will be the King of the Island once Prospero is dead.

Ariel also wants to be free from Prospero.  Prospero promises to free him after Ariel finishes doing dirty work for him.

The Wonderlamp

Wonderlamp is a design collaboration between Pieke Bergmans and Studio Job presented by Dimos last week in Milan. Pieke is known for her glass light bulbs. To make her "wonderlamps she uses archetype material using glass he same way we use bronze. Each object has its own idea from light to over bowling pot. The 7 pieces are of everyday life pieces: pots and pans, a torch, and a neon lamp.

NYCreativeInterns

Nick and Gennifer from my New Media design class presented their blog posts from NYcreative interns website.  Nick posted a blog entry called the Commuter's Survival Guide: What Every NYC Intern Should Know.  I thought this entry was a very informative and useful beacuse I will soon be the commuting NYC intern next semester.

The commuter's survival guide

Our very own Nick from my New Media class wrote a blog about commuting to your internship on NYCreativeInterns.com.  He gave us a survival guide.  I read it and found it very helpful because in not to long I will be that intern commuting to and from the city three days a week.  His first tip was on the rates of commutation.  He talks about different options you can choose from like a monthly pass, or a ten-trip pass.  His second tip is to know whether you are traveling peak or off peak.  There are different charges on tickets depending on  rush hour.  His third tip is to buy the city transit app for your iphone.  It is a complete guide of the NYC subway system.  You can also go to Hopstop.com (Ive been on this site, Its great!).  Tip 4 i found was very interesting and useful.  Text "(station name)" to "(station name)" to number 266266 to find out MTA train times.  The number instantly text you back the next 5 trains,  It very quick and there is no need for the Internet.  SO COOL. His 5th tip is to use your debit or credit card.  The machines don't give you back dollars, but gold coins.  Tip 6 is very important.  Check the weather before you leave for work.  Running through the city in the rain unprepared is not fun and sitting in the office with soggy shoes is worst. Tip 7 is to travel lightly.  Limit yourself to one compact bag.  Tip 8 is to bring your cell phone charger in your bag. This tip is handy for me because my phone can't keep its charge during the day.  Tip 9, always have a few extra dollars of cash on you.  Smaller food venues at train stations usually only take cash.  Tip 10, wear comfortable foot wear during the commute then change to your heels when you get off the train.  Tip 11, Know your proper train etiquette, respect your elders, avoid talking on the phone and don't blast music on the train.  They don't want to hear what your hearing.  And Tip 12 get a quick breakfast in Penn station for $1.99.  Jamba Juice has oatmeal for only 1.99.  I'm defiantly checking that out. Thanks Nick for these helpful tips. I'm now more prepared for my spring internship.

Exceptional Person

While riding the train to Penn Station I meet a filmmaker, named Keith Battista.  I was lost and he helped me with directions.  We got to talking and I found out that he is a filmmaker in Long Island.  He writes and directs a web series called "The Professionals."  "The Professionals" is a comedy about tech support and contract killers.  He has close to 100,000 subscribers.  One episode
at it's peak had about 50,000 views.  His highest viewed episode has 673,240 views which is pretty impressive.  "The Professionals" has its own youtube channel and it has 2,318,454 views.

He got into doing what he does because of his love for film making.  He was just always into it.  He has a undergraduate degree in film and worked on independent films projects in school.  With that background he decided to create his own web series.  Which is coming along very nicely if I might add.

As I was getting off the train he left me with a few tips on becoming successful.  For film makers you have to have a love for films because you will be working and thinking about them all the time.  Also you have to be able to multi task and tell stories well.  The last and best tip he has for all creators is "Just Do It!"  There is only so much you can learn from books.   You can learn so much more if you just get out and just do it!

Omnio WOWkeys and iPhone team up to make an awsome keyboard.

This prototype keyboard looks amazingly fun and I don't even have a iPhone.  The doc is PC or Mac compatible.  It has 15 hot keys designed for the iPhone and you could  make the phone into a media center remote control or multi-touch trackpad with apps from the app store.  This reminds me of the ipad.  If you could have a keyboard for the iPhone why need the ipad.  It's cheaper.  The USB keyboard is only $100.  Because this is only a prototype there isn't a lot of information about it but my favorite feature would be to use it as keyboard to type in text messages or write blogs only using the keyboard.  I falling in love with this keyboard already.

Victoria Monsul

Victoria Monsul came to Prof Klinkowstein's class last Thursday to share with us some tips on life after graduation.  She graduated from Pratt Institute in 2007 with a bachelors of Fine Arts in comm.design and has done of number of things with her life. Like interning at various places and working for places like IMG, Silent Touch Productions, and Mother Industries to name a few.  A few tips she gave us were, be authentic.  Be yourself, be real show that you are passionate about what you do.  Every interview she went to, she got the job, because she is authentic.  She shows flexibility, excitement, manners, and that she is an overall interesting person.  Victoria also strives on doing things that might be out of your comfort zone.  Like meeting random people,  and exploring different things.  Life is your education and you show live it to the fullest. Another tip was to learn how to fail.  Don't focus on the negativity, let it go, push it behind you, learn from it and move forward. "If your not failing everyday, your not setting enough goals."  I found her answer to my grad school question interesting.  She said that it looks good on your resume and it is a door opener.  But in her opinion it isn't that necessary. And for every job postings, the requirement lists that I have seen, they mainly focus on experience.  They don't ask what master's degree you have.  And if I could get out of being in debt before the age for 50 without going to graduate school then I would take it.  Like Victoria said it looks "sexy".  Overall I greatly enjoyed her presentation and I am definitely going to visit the WIX lounge when I get a chance. Thanks Victoria!!

Quirky's Unhampered Has Got Me Interested

0qunhampered.jpgWhen I first saw this hamper I automatically thought. This would be Great to have in my dorm room.  I already have a really small space and I'm always looking for little places to put new things.  Now that laundry on campus is free I find myself dong more and more laundry.  Unhampered by Quirky Designs is a laundry basket that can fold flat when not in use.  It also holds your laundry detergent and softener in a smaller compartment as well.  When folded, Unhampered can be easily stored between the washer and drier, under your sink, or any other place where you have an extra inch or two.  Unfolded, it has multiple handles, and storage compartments.  It costs $24.99 from the website, which i think is a pretty good price.  The other items on their site are pretty cool as well, Check out the Wrapster.

Check Into Charion Hotel With your NFC-equipped mobil phone.

The Charion Hotel in Stockholm is starting a new pilot program that allows guests the ability to use their phones in order to get into their rooms.  You can download the program from your smartphone, store it and wipe it clean.  You can check in and out with the application as well.  You just hold the phone to a check in/out station and it does the process instantly.  During the trial run Samsung handsets are being provided to select customers.  the trial will last four months.  the application is called Near Field Communication (NFC).  the ASSA ALBOY's goal is to be able to have cell phones open office doors, and even your home doors.  I am a little skeptical about the safety of this.  But there are also safety issues when it comes to regular keys and card keys so having your cell phone to open doors shouldn't change much.  I think the idea is pretty cool. Winner Of 2010 Best TV Advertisement Award

The winner of the 2010 Best TV advertisement award is Nolan's Cheddar.  I thought this commercial was very cute and funny.  The cinematography and the sound design was great.  It really kept you guessing because you didn't know if the mouse was going to get caught in the trap. I loved the short film so much that I had to find the creator.  His name is John Nolan and he actually has more films that he has done.  After viewing his website I noticed he is also really into what he calls "animatronics" which are robotic like creations that he makes.  They can also move by themselves or move with someone actually moving with them.  He has a studio in London where he creates very unique works of art.  Congratulations on the Advertisement Award John!!

VW Folding Bike Concept

A lot of designers are trying t recreate/redesign the bike. Maybe in the future more people will be riding bikes than cars. Volkswagon new electric bike concept is designed to fold into a circle that fits in the compartment that is usually occupied by the spare tire. It's range is only about 12.5 miles so it wont take you very far but its not meant for long distance treks. It official top speed is only 20 km/h so that Germans can wear it helmentless. The bike runs on batteries and can be charged from the car. It has no pedals so you just hope and and go, similar to that of a scooter but looks cooler. Video0vwebike02.jpg

Lufdesign Dustpan Bin concept

Lufdesign created a Dustpan+Bin combo. It looks really neat but I can see where it may have its flaws. The lip is very thick and it may not be the most effective dustpan. But i do like the concept of simply flipping a dust pan 90 degrees to change it from one object to another. The concept pics show crumpled papers, which is something I don't normally through away or sweep up so I would have to see this in action before I plan on buying it.

Self-driving Taxi

A team of professors at Freie Universitat Berlin have been in the process of developing autonomous cars.  This self-driving taxi drives without a person in the car behind the wheel.  It has 3 cameras, a velodyne laser scanner, GPS, odometer, radars and lux laser scanners attached to the car.  It also has a variety of embedded processors.  The car was made in Germany.  It has a companion iPad app from Appirion.  You just start the program, type in the coordinates and wait for the car to extract itself from a parking lot. Its very cool. Watch the video to see it in action.       Video

The Rowheel

Salim Nasser, engineer at NASA, won a $20,000 innovation prize this month for designing a wheelchair that does the reverse of a typical wheelchair.  Instead of the occupant pushing in order for the chair to go, the occupant pulls.  Pulling avoids the repetitive stress of injuries caused by pushing, using your arm and back muscles.  This prototype contains specially designed wheels which can be attached to existing wheelchairs.  Hopefully we will be able to see this product on the mass market.  And because of its simplistic design I'm sure it will be cheaper than the electric models.  Maybe by the time I'm old and grey wheelchairs will be molded off of this one.

Anna Akbari's Presentation

In Anna Akbari's thesis she explores self-presentation, new media, sexuality and the workplace, visual conformity and rebellion, techniques of the body and the transience of identity in a consumer society.  She states that fashion creates a "space of appearance" within the human drama, which facilities the individual's ability to speak freely and claim power. In her hair chronicles she talks about how we let our hair define our personality.  Everyday of our life we wake up and put on a mask.  It can either reveal or conceal our personality.  Throughout Anna's life she put on different personalities to see how she felt in each one.  Why is that society makes us choose a personality and from that how we live our lives.  Anna told the audience to break away from the norm one day and see what happens.  You will either get a positive or negative reaction but the experience is what counts.  And take note of how you feel when you break away from the norm.  At the end of her presentation she gave us very important message "Think, Write, Speak + Strategic Self-Presentation = HIRED".  All in all the presentation was very inspiring.

1 Hour design Challenge: Play-Doh Kicks

Core 77 launched a design challenge where contestants had to sculpt a rendition of their favorite kick in play-doh.  From 100 pairs of shoes they had to choose winners. With the help of Wooy, editor and founder of Sneaker Freaker, and Kueng-Caputo, Swiss designers and copy experts they were able to narrow down the entries to 21, one grand prizewinner, and 2 honorable mentions.  They based these entries on that of "magic combination of fidelity, craftsmanship and interpretation."  The winner of the challenge is Flipp82 from Germany with his interpretation of the Adidas SL 72.  He will receive a $100 gift certificate to the new Core77 store, Hand Eye Supply, a copy of Copy by Kueng-Caputo, a lifetime subscription to Sneaker Freaker, and a publication spot in their December issue.  This is all very cool.  His rendition of the sneaker doesn't even look like Play-doh.  He even covered the sole of the shoe.

Owner of Segway Inc. falls off a cliff to his death

Jimi Henselden a UK businessman, liked the segway so much he bought the company.  He was driving a more rugged version of the segway around his estate.  He was reportedly found dead Sunday morning after he drove the scooter off a cliff and into a river.  The cause of his death is not yet known.  Henselden was 62 years old and gained his fortune by creating an innovative design for wire cage walls that has become standard equipment for NATO, American and British Forces.  It's a tragedy that someone had to die from this accident. Racy Commerical??

On engadget's website they posted a video that shows a tired, thirsty, struggling man, murdering a/his Wii with a PlayStation Move controller.  The settling reminds me a lot of the movie "The Book of Eli" because this man is in a deserted town and he looks like he's running away from something that is wither trying to kill him or capture him.  I think it's pretty clever of Sony not to put their logo anywhere on the video so that hey could easy distance them selves if they get in trouble.  PlayStation Move's release date is tomorrow September 17th.  In my opinion it looks very similar to the Wii and mostly likely functions the same.  However the video is pretty sick.  Video

Energy Saving Light Bulb

PLUMEN 001
PLUMEN 001The Plumen 001 is the first very stylist energy saving light bub.  It uses 80% less energy than the typical incandescent light bulb.  It's better for the environment while keeping your wallet fat! And best of all it lasts 8 times longer.  I think they looks very cool.  Instead of the regular glass bulb.  It's made of bent glass tubes that creates an interesting design.  It is being sold only in the United Kingdom for 20 pounds which is 30.92 US dollars.  IT is also being sold in Europe for 30 euros whichh is 38.76 US dollars.  So if I want the Plumen I will be buying it in the United Kingdom. Branding Research

Branding research
  1. Attitude branding- the choice to represent a larger feeling, which is not necessarily connected with the product or consumption of the product at all. Ex:StarburstCapri SunThe Body Shop
  2. No Branding- imitates generic brand simplicity. Ex: Muji
  3. Derived Brands- In this case the supplier of a key component, used by a number of suppliers of the end-product, may wish to guarantee its own position by promoting that component as a brand in its own right. The most frequently quoted example is Intel, which secures its position in the PC market with the slogan "Intel Inside".

Dog-e-Minder. Is It Really Necessary?

I truly think the inventor of this product is trying to make money on people who like to spend their money on stupidity.  The Dog-e-Minder is a waterproof, three-button device which attaches to your pet;s collar and keeps track of when it was walked, fed, or given medication.  Each button has a symbol that relates to the activity.  The "fire hydrant" symbolizes when you walk it, the "dog bone" symbolizes when it was fed and the "RX" represents anytime you give the dog medication.  When any of these takes are performed you hold the corresponding button for three seconds.  And it records the date and time.  The tag also works as an ID tag.  IT shows the name and a contact number.  This device comes in various colors and is $20 (buy one get one free).  So if you have money to burn and a precious dog buy the Dog-e-Minder!!

Microsoft Annonces The Price For X-Box Kentics

Microsoft announces its price of X box 360 Kinect.  The bundle costs $399 and is set to launch November 4 in the USA.  Kinect is very similar to the Wii except more advanced.  It brings video gaming to the next level.  Th Kinect comes with no controller because everything is done thought motions of your body.  It joins the relationship between human beings and technology. My favorite part of this new hardware is the fact that you don't need a controller.  I'm sure when it comes out I'm buying one because my brother has Xbox 360 already.  I Can't Wait!

Rubens Tube

While I was researching sound experiments I came across a video of a guy experimenting sound with fire.  He used a tube of propane and had fire rise through the tube.  He first pushed through the tube 449 Hz to show how sound changes the way the fire moves.  He also used higher frequencies such as jazz then rock.  Its pretty cool to experience sound visualization.

Sound Research

Sound art is a diverse group of art practices that considers wide notions of sound, listening and hearing as its predominant focus. There are often distinct relationships forged between the visual and aural domains of art and perception by sound artists. Like many genres of contemporary art, sound art is interdisciplinary in nature, or takes on hybrid forms. Sound art often engages with the subjects of acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronics, noise music, audio media and technology (both analog and digital), found or environmental sound, explorations of the human body, sculpture, film or video and an ever-expanding set of subjects that are part of the current discourse of contemporary art.

Sound Samples

Sound artists

Sound design is the process of specifying, acquiring and manipulating audio elements. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including film, theatre, music recording, live music performance, and computer game software development. Sound design most commonly involves the manipulation of previously composed audio, such as previously recorded music and sound effects. In some instances it may also involve the composition or manipulation of audio to create a desired effect or mood. A Sound Designer is one who practices the art of sound design.
